It is almost garden time and I have some great gardening book recommendations. Actually since most of the gardening work gets done in the fall before we put our gardens to bed for the season, this is the fun part, so for all of us who just get excited about gardening, let’s call it Garden Planning Time!!!! The book recommendations I have here are good for all of North America.I live in a zone 4 climate so the summer-growing season is short and without planning you might be disappointed, or worse yet miss it!!! Gardens can be beautiful and bountiful, so mix it up a bit with flowers and vegetables!
Here are a couple of garden book recommendations almost reference books that are my favorites.
This is the first of my gardening book recommendations and I cannot recommend this book enough. The pictures are fantastic and the wealth of information is like taking a master gardening course from the author himself. From seed to harvest and everything in between Ed Smith takes you along on his 30 years of gardening from a small plot of 120 square feet, to his present 1500 square foot garden. Ed has coined the acronym W-O-R-D which stands for his gardening method, Wide paths, Organic methods, Raised beds, and Deep soil. If you are just beginning or if you have been gardening for years you will find yourself reaching for this book over and over as you share your gardening journey with the Smiths! The real life stories and anecdotes about gardening adventures keep the reading fun and informative.Ed was growing organic when it was not yet popular. He has learned as he grew and he shares that knowledge with his readers. A big 339 pages of information!
When your gardening time is mostly containers and small spaces this is the book recommendation to answer your questions and allow you to grow a higher yield garden with less work! More and more folks want to have the satisfaction of growing some of their own food but have either too little time or too little land and this book is a must. The author continues his friendly easy read and gives the small space gardener a wealth of information from making and amending soil to seeds to compost to making your own self watering containers.Several tried and true garden plans are presented in the pages of this book! A reference book you will not want to be without! Over 250 pages of information, pictures and ideas!
#3.”The Flower Gardeners Bible” by Lewis and Nancy Hill-is the last of the gardening book recommendations presented here.
Here is a gardening book recommendation for the flower aficionados out there , and again a plethora of information for growing beautiful flowers from seed to frost, annuals and perennials, what individual flowers like, when and how to divide perennials, what to add to the soil, pests, diseases and more all with gorgeous pictures and very clear diagrams. The book has three sections, part one is all about soil and keeping plants healthy, part two has 23 theme designs gardens and plans while part three has color photographs of more than 400 plants.
